Pirelli and their partnership with Kiranga Megatara

The partnership between Pirelli and Kirana Megatara, Indonesian processor of raw natural rubber. A union in the name of the sustainability.

Indonesia is a key country for Pirelli as it is one of the areas which most cultivates the Hevea Brasiliensis, better known as the ‘rubber tree’. The bark that is extracted from it is one of the most precious raw materials found in nature. The Hevea Brasiliensis produces natural rubber which was discovered centuries ago and used for many different applications because of its elasticity. Originally native to South America but due to trade and colonialism, reached southeast Asia where the climate and habitat encouraged growth.

Today in Indonesia around 2 million families, cultivate the natural rubber tree and have based their sustenance on this now for generations. The farmers play an important role in Pirelli’s sustainability project. To successfully farm this plant requires a blend of experience and precision in every part of the process known as ‘tapping’. It consists of delicately stripping away the bark, avoiding damaging the tree to keep its productivity high and seeking to avoid possible contamination which would negatively affect the quality of the product. The care and attention to this process is of upmost importance for the sustainability of the trees. If this is upheld then the tree and of the surrounding environment is safeguarded.

However, if a tree is carved badly, it becomes unproductive which increases the risk of it being abandoned and leads to deforestation to make room for new Hevea Brasiliensis plantations, often impacting local biodiversity.

Kirana Megatara holds an 18% market share for natural rubber in Indonesia and is one of the largest Indonesian processors. Pirelli and Kirana Megatara are in a partnership that goes beyond commercial relations: it is a bond strengthened through the link of social responsibility. Pirelli and Kirana Megatara are leaders in sustainability efforts and are in favour of local farmers and their families.

Training the farmers to achieve maximum productivity while fully respecting the environment is the main objective

Pirelli and Kirana Megatara hold a tapping competition, which promotes the best local tappers in a friendly challenge to see who has the best methods of tapping. The event also aims to raise awareness among farmers to use the best techniques of cultivation and tapping to achieve an increasingly pure, uncontaminated product, distinguished by its high quality which both helps sustainability and increases the earnings of the families. At the end of the competition, the three best tappers are awarded prizes and their families are rewarded.

The partnership between Pirelli and Kirana Megatara aims to go beyond the focus on productivity and support the development of the younger generations. This forward-thinking attitude aims to provide the local younger generation the opportunity to study. Pirelli and Kirana Megatara pay out for scholarships in favour of the children of the local farmers helping them obtain guaranteed, adequate schooling and focus on preserving the surrounding environment, with growing awareness.
