Perfectly fitted tyres
As original equipment manufacturers, Pirelli offers more than 1,200 homologated tyres for perfect driving, based on each car brand's specific requirements for every car model. From our close partnerships with manufacturers, we have gained technological expertise in original equipment homologation that few can match and as such, we are poised to maintain our competitive edge in the long run.
Behind the creation of new marked tyres is an understanding of the dynamic and electronic "personality" of the car, together with the manufacturer's requirements. During the first design phase that lasts up to three months, Pirelli determines a tyre's specific characteristics. For example, to ensure the quietest ride possible, Pirelli would develop the footprint of the tread pattern to avoid vibrations caused by resonance between the chassis and tyre.
The effort that goes into creating customised Pirelli marked tyres is similar to the care a tailor takes in making bespoke clothing. Thorough testing is required for homologation, which takes 10 times more effort and an average of three years for a high performance tyre, compared to six months for a standard tyre.
Pirelli has long been established as one of the highest-level partners for premium car manufacturers. Thanks to the collaborative work, we have gained technological know-how that few can match and are poised to maintain our competitive edge in the long run.
An example of our dedication to innovation is the creation of our Run-Flat tyres, initially developed for BMW cars to give added peace of mind to drivers, which are now increasing in popularity with other car manufacturers.
In the final stages of homologation, which takes three to six months, the product is launched in its final form and perfected. Drivers who value performance understand there is no better-performing car than one fitted with original equipment tyres that were designed especially to suit it. For instance, the P Zero was designed to transmit more than 900bhp to the road, which perfectly complements the refined technology of the McLaren P1.
