Local car services: FAQs and advice

You should book in with your local car service garage because doing so can prevent plenty of inconvenient and expensive vehicle maintenance problems.

  • Firstly, if you don’t get your car serviced periodically – around once every six or twelve months, for example – then you run the risk of letting small, easily fixed problems turn into complex, more expensive ones.

  • ·Your car could also stop working due to maintenance issues. Dealing with a breakdown is much more disruptive than taking five minutes to book a car service online.

  • Booking a car service ensures your safety too. If you continue to drive a car that's clearly damaged or showing a mechanical issue, you run serious risks behind the wheel.

Car services aren’t like MOTs. If your technician finds an issue in your service which would normally result in an MOT failure, you can still drive home on your existing MOT certificate.

When you book your local car service, you'll know about issues before they legally need to be repaired. We still recommend getting an issue fixed during an interim service before your vehicle is due its annual MOT.

We've written a handy guide to help you learn more about the many reasons why you should service your car regularly and with a trusted mechanic at your local car service garage.

When you need to book a car service, there are often plenty of tell-tale signs from your car.

Understanding these is an important part of getting repairs done quickly and economically. If you've not received a reminder yet from your local car service garage, you should get in touch if you notice the following signs:

·        Dashboard warning lights

·        Issues with braking

·        Strange noises

·        Stalling and engine issues

·        Vibrations and shuddering

·        Problems with ignition

·        Increased fuel use

·        Noisy gear changes

·        Smoky exhaust emissions

We've written a guide to when you need to book a car service, which could help you learn more about identifying the above, along with some other things to watch out for.

Car service packages from Protyre are available across three servicing tiers, with each one including checks for different driver and vehicle needs. This means you can get the most from your car service without paying for anything you don't need.

Our car servicing packages include:

·        Gold (full: 59 checks)

·        Silver (interim: 48 checks)

·        Bronze (basic: 27 checks)

These three service levels are available for most car makes and models. So, whatever the condition, history or age of your vehicle, we include all the right checks when you book a car service with your local Protyre centre.

In our guide to what's included with a Protyre service, we've written a full list of the car servicing checks that come with our Bronze, Silver and Gold packages. Alternatively, you can call our team on 0333 060 2294 or chat to us via email. Our experts are here to advise you on the right car service for your car and driving style.

We all want to reduce the cost of our car maintenance, so you’re probably wondering how much a car service is. The answer varies and always depends on the level of service you need. Our Bronze Service starts from £79, with Silver from £109 and Gold from £169.

After you book a car service online, the final price you pay will also consider some other factors.

·        Firstly, the fewer problems that are fixed, the lower your final bill will be. As a result, in-depth car services can cost more than ones that offer more basic checks.

·        The specific parts that need fixing or replacing can impact how much a car service costs, too. Large-scale engine repairs will cost more than a faulty brake pad, for instance.

·        Additionally, car services cost more in certain areas of the country, and the price can differ depending on which garage you choose.

We know that preparing for the cost of booking a car service can feel daunting, so we've written a guide to average car service costs across the UK.

** While our prices are competitive, servicing pricing may vary depending on engine size and vehicle type. Luxury cars, certain vehicle marques and engines over 2.5L may be subject to change.

The time it takes to service a car depends on a few factors. If no issues are found, a full service will take around three hours, letting you get back behind the wheel on the very same day.

If problems are discovered that need fixing, a mechanic from your local car service garage will contact you to let you know. They will advise you on what needs to be done to solve the issue, how long it will take to source the parts needed, and then how long it should take to fix.

The length of a car service truly depends on the condition of your car and the parts it may or may not require. If you'd like to learn more, head over to our guide to how long a car service takes.

Not sure when you should book your car service? The exact service interval and due date vary depending on the make and model of your car but, generally:

·        Full (Gold) Service: Due every 12 months or 12,000 miles (whichever comes first)

·        Interim (Silver) Service: Due every six months or 6,000 miles (again, whichever comes first)

·        Basic (Bronze) Service: Due whenever the car’s engine oil and oil filter require replacement

If you’re still unsure when your car service is due, we've written a guide to help you find out when your car needs a service.

Once you’ve booked your car service appointment and the day has arrived, it’s important to bring the right things with you to make your mechanic’s job easier.

You can bring the locking wheel nuts to help the mechanic check the wheel assemblies, and you’ll need to leave your car keys with them too. Also, providing a full service history and the service book can be useful. That said, if you've booked a car service appointment with us, you won’t be turned away if you don't have these items with you.

If you’ve just got yourself a new motor, booking a car service might be the last thing on your mind. We recommend making sure that you know exactly when you’ll have to call your local car service garage.

Your new car will need its new service depending on its specific service interval, which you can find in the vehicle’s handbook. This is typically only after twelve months or 12,000 miles – whichever comes first.

We've written a guide to when new cars need their first service so you can prepare to keep on top of your maintenance from the get-go.
