ADAS Calibration at Protyre
ADAS is the collective name for the range of factory-issue vehicle safety features. It stands for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems and these encompass everything from sensors and cameras to computer imaging and radars.
At Protyre, we've adapted to immense technological advancements within the motor industry. With professional ADAS calibration equipment now installed in selected Autocentres, we can cater for vehicles with ADAS installed. Our expertly trained technicians know how to calibrate all ADAS features safely, efficiently and to the same standard as a main dealer.
To keep these top-spec features in good working order, ADAS calibration is required. Below, we've explained more about this service and how you can book ADAS calibration near you. If you have any questions in the meantime, please get in touch with your local Protyre Autocentre.
What is ADAS?
Designed to provide safety and comfort while driving, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are becoming ever more common in the latest generation of vehicles.
ADAS is designed to avoid collisions and accidents by offering technologies that alert the driver to potential problems, or to avoid collisions by implementing safeguards and taking control of the vehicle. Some examples include autonomous emergency braking, cruise control, lane departure and pedestrian and traffic sign recognition.
ADAS Calibration
To do their jobs, ADAS rely on inputs from a variety of sensors that allow the systems to “see” what is happening around the vehicle. The most common are cameras and ultrasonic sensors. Steering sensors are also used to help determine the direction of vehicle travel. Some systems use information from a single type of sensor, but others combine information from multiple sensors to obtain a more accurate “view” of the vehicles situation.

ADAS Calibration: Protyre FAQs
Designed to provide safety and comfort while driving, ADAS and connected devices are prevalent in the latest generation of vehicles. Keeping these features maintained and in good working order is part of your responsibility to use self-driving functions safely.
The purpose of ADAS is to reduce the risk of driver collisions and accidents. ADAS can be responsible for alerting the driver to potential problems, including those that implement safeguards and take control of the vehicle. Some examples include:
Autonomous emergency braking
Adaptive cruise control
Lane keeping assist (LKA), known as lane departure warning
Parking assist
Pedestrian detection
Traffic sign recognition
Many new vehicles are fitted with a variety of sensors that detect moving objects around the vehicle. The most common are cameras and ultrasonic sensors.
Steering sensors are also used to help determine the direction of vehicle travel. Some systems use information from a single type of sensor but others combine information from multiple sensors to obtain a more accurate 'view' of the vehicle's situation and position.
Detections are indicated to the driver in various ways to promote safe driving on all types of roads, from slow-moving inner-city commutes to long-distance motorway drives.
ADAS calibration is required after mechanics work on your vehicle, whether for an interim car service or essential repairs. If external bodywork or any key components have been removed, replaced or upgraded, it's likely that you'll need to book ADAS recalibration.
Our ADAS experts carry out two main types of calibration in selected Protyre Autocentres:
Static ADAS calibration: Static calibration involves testing various sensors or features while the car is stationary. These checks must be carried out in a controlled environment by specialist mechanics, using only purpose-built equipment.
Dynamic ADAS calibration: Using specialist equipment, this involves checking cameras and sensors while your car is moving. Get in touch to check if we have the necessary Hunter alignment equipment in your local Autocentre, ready to offer dynamic calibration for your car.
Every time a piece of bodywork, including the front and rear windows, needs replacing or repairing, the ADAS systems within those parts of the vehicle need to be recalibrated. This ensures that they continue to work as expected – and keep you safe – on the roads.
For example, a misaligned camera could lead to incorrect readings and ultimately contribute to an accident. Sensors can be found on almost every side of new vehicles, so it's likely that the ADAS will require recalibration after any mechanical work.
Some instances when ADAS calibration is required might include:
Windscreen replacement
Front bodywork repairs
Full wheel alignment, or new wheels fitted
Suspension replacement or repair
If you're booking a Hybrid Service or any work for an electric car, we'll include ADAS calibration too. Our expert mechanics are trained to the highest standards, so you can rest assured that our IMI Accredited team is one you can trust.
Each ADAS recalibration job depends on specific features. While one car might only need its rear cameras calibrating, for example, another might need all its nearside sensors looking at.
We don't charge a set fee for ADAS calibration because every customer comes to us with different circumstances. If you'd like to book your car in, please complete our ADAS Enquiry Form at the bottom of the page. Once submitted, we'll get back to you as soon as possible with a quote.
Wheel alignment
When your car has correctly aligned wheels, you benefit from even wear and a longer lifespan from your tyres. Problems with wheel alignment are often caused by hitting a pothole or kerb, in turn placing an increased load on steering and suspension components.
Suspension alignment
Vehicle suspension misalignment can result in rapid irregular tyre wear, poor handling and reduced vehicle safety. It occurs when the suspension and the steering system are not working at their correct angles and it's one of the most common suspension problems. If you drive on bumpy roads fairly often, alignment can suffer over time.
When your wheel alignment is misaligned, the direction which the ADAS sensors project is warped. This impacts their sensing ability, causing them to show inaccurate readings and compromise the safety of your drive.
Why is alignment so important?
Proper alignment allows ADAS to work effectively, which is integral to your car's official safety rating. Vehicles equipped with ADAS, especially lane departure and emergency braking, need to be properly aligned with the direction of travel.
Cameras and sensors use different inputs from the vehicle, such as the steering angle sensor. If the steering angle sensor is adjusted during a wheel alignment, the forward-facing camera, which controls the lane departure warning, might 'think' that the steering wheel is turned.
These faults might seem minor but they can prompt the vehicle to 'correct' the steering to stay on the road, even if the vehicle is traveling in the correct lane position between the lines. That's why ADAS calibration is so important after any work undertaken on your car.
Remember, if you have any concerns about your alignment, it's best to book a free steering or suspension check with Protyre.
