Falken Azenis FK510 closes gap on premium tyre brands following latest tyre tests
By Alistair Crumley
Auto Express were back at Continental’s proving ground in Ulvalde, Texas to test the best car tyres of 2018 and find out which are the safest, most fuel efficient and quietest tyres for your car. The test covers nine criteria, including a more driver-relevant cabin noise rating, dry grip and a range of wet road tests.
Falken are making very promising progress on premium tyre brands, as the results from the recent Auto Express tyre tests confirm. In fact, this is the closest that the German-based Japanese producer has been to the top of these tyre tests and it comes as no surprise with the FK510 impressing in other magazine tyre tests across Europe, including a second place with Auto Bild in Germany.
Tyre size 225/45 R17
Falken has certainly taken a step forward with the FK510 from the 2016 version, delivering a more balanced performance across the tests. An important factor for its success was that despite not being at the top of the table, it was close to the winners in each test. The most successful performance was in dry conditions where the FK510 came second in the braking test, just 40cm behind the winning Pirelli.
Despite finishing sixth on the handling track, the Azenis was less than a second off the winning pace. Behind the wheel it performed well through the fast turns where minimal lock was required and generally, there was a pleasing sharpness.
Although the Falken Azenis FK510 was less successful in the wet, it wasn’t far off the top tyres finishing joint second in the deep water of the straight aquaplaning.
The results are displayed below:
All 225/45R17 tyres had weight ratings of 94, as well as speed ratings of Y. Also included are the tyre label ratings which are graded A-G (A is best) for wet grip (WG) and rolling resistance (RR). Pass-by noise (N) is measured in decibels; the lower the better.
