Diagnostic plug in report

If you’ve got warning lights and error codes illuminating your dashboard like a mobile disco, a Protyre diagnostics check can help to reveal any issues there may be before serious damage happens and requires costly services and repairs.

Your vehicle’s engine is comprised of hundreds of small parts and sensors, so the exact fault may not be easy to see on your own. A diagnostics test can identify whether a warning light stems from issues in areas including the engine, ignition coils, throttle, and much more. When carrying out an engine diagnostics check, our highly trained and qualified technicians use state-of-the-art equipment to help to determine exactly why any warning lights have come on.

What is a vehicle diagnostics check?

As technology has advanced and car components have become computerised, identifying problems is no longer a time-consuming and expensive task thanks to the engine diagnostic test. Our diagnostic tools not only reveal problems with major components – including the transmission, oil tank, exhaust system, and brakes – but they also identify performance issues in things like the fuel injectors, air flow, and coolant.

During the test the code reader will notify our technicians of any fault codes so that they can know which component’s parameters are off or out of range. However, it will not be able to give details of the exact cause of the issue. This is where our technicians will apply their years of experience, knowledge, and expertise to diagnose the underlying problem.

What is a diagnostic test on a car? How does it work?

As technology has advanced and our cars have become ever-more computerised, identifying problems is no longer a time-consuming and expensive task thanks to engine diagnostic tests.

Your vehicle’s engine is comprised of hundreds of small parts. If something goes wrong – typically shown by a warning light on the dashboard – that means finding the exact fault can be tough.

Thankfully, in modern cars, many components and systems are connected via sensors linked to the car’s computer, known as the engine control unit (ECU).

Using a vehicle diagnostics test, conducted with state-of-the-art onboard diagnostics (OBD) scanners that connect wirelessly to the ECU, our trained mechanics can identify the issue.

They can work out whether a warning light stems from problems in particular areas, including the engine, ignition coils, throttle, and much more. These issues are shown as car diagnostic codes on the OBD equipment.

From there, the issue can be closely investigated and then serviced. This makes car diagnostic tests much quicker than tinkering around in the engine bay trying to find and diagnose the issue by eye.

When should you get a car diagnostic test?

If your car’s dashboard is displaying one or more warning lights or error codes, a car diagnostic test is recommended. What’s more, tests are especially important if lights are displayed and you have your MOT coming up – check your MOT due date here.

If the lights are amber or red, then this indicates a more serious issue than a blue or green light, which may simply show that a car system is running – such as the lights. To find out what your vehicle’s car warning lights mean, consult your owner’s manual.

As well as preventing damage to the engine related to continued use, some dashboard warning lights may also lead to your ECU artificially limiting the power output of the engine. Instead of contending with a top speed of 40mph, it makes simple sense to opt for a diagnostic test to find and fix the issue instead.

What gets checked during a car diagnostic test?

Our car diagnostic test tools can reveal problems with both major and minor components, alongside highlighting performance issues that could lead to a bigger problem down the line. We can check:

Transmission

Oil tank

Exhaust system

Brake quality

Fuel injection performance

Ignition timing

Air flow

Cooling system

Electrical systems

Engine management system

Emissions control system

Tyres

Lights And much more…

During the test, the OBD scanner will notify our technicians of any car diagnostic test fault codes. These will show us which components’ parameters are off or out of range – potentially signifying a fault.

That said, the scanner will not be able to give details of the exact cause of the issue. This is where our technicians will apply their years of experience, knowledge, and expertise to diagnose the underlying problem with your car.
