Chelmsford Women’s Institute Meet Car Care

On Saturday 27th our centre Supertyres - Team Protyre in Maldon hosted an exclusive ladies’ night for members of the Chelmsford New City Girls Women’s Institute.
The Women's Institute (WI) was formed in 1915 to encourage women to band together in their local communities to become more involved in producing food during the WW1. Since then, the organisation's aims have broadened and the WI is now the largest voluntary women's organisation in the UK with almost 220,000 members in approximately 6,300 different WI groups. The WI provides women with educational opportunities, the chance to learn new skills, to take part in a wide variety of activities and to campaign on issues that matter to them and their communities.
The Institute in Chelmsford puts great emphasis into their motto ‘fun, friendship, education, networking and community’.
13 Chelmsford WI members visited Maldon to brush up on their car maintenance skills. The team at the centre split the group into two parties as to visit two of three ‘stations’ set up for demos.
The first station looked at the importance of tyres including topics such as tread depth, tyre damage, seasonal tyres and how to read the sidewall and what it means.
The second station looked at fluid under the bonnet and how to check and top them up. It also covered what happens during and MOT and different types of services available plus those pesky dashboard lights and what they mean.
Finally, the team got to see the basic on how to change a wheel at the road side. It also identified the safety measure they should take and to check what spare kit they had in their car such as a jack, spare wheel or puncture repair kit.
They all of course got some goodies to take home with them including a nifty tread depth card so they can keep an eye on their tyre treads before their next visit to the centre.
Gill Fell, club organiser told us it was a lot better than she expected it to be. Women are stigmatised often in garage environments and it can be daunting learning new things.
