A Goodyear Icon Returns to the Skies
By Julia Freeman
Since the 1920s the Goodyear Blimp has served as an icon. To mark the centenary of this icon Goodyear will be bringing the Blimp back to Europe. The Blimp has been seen in the skies over many iconic events in the USA and Europe over the years. In Europe these events include: Formula 1 at Nurburgring, Roland Garros, FIFA World Cup in 1974 and Royal Weddings to name a few.
It was 48 years ago that the Goodyear Blimp made its maiden voyage in Europe. The flight was flown across the United Kingdom just after the aircraft’s (Europa) construction in Cardington, England 1972.
The Europa went on to fly over many European cities including Venice in 1978.
The European return of the Blimp marks coincides with Goodyear’s return to motorsports in Europe. In 2019, Goodyear made its racing comeback in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), as well as being announced as the official tyre supplier to the European Le Mans Series, British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) and, via a new media partnership with leading European sporting broadcaster, Eurosport, the FIA World Touring Car Cup (WTCR) and Pure ETCR for 2020 and beyond.
We look forward to seeing the Blimp in UK skies again.
