MOTs due in September, October, or November should be booked “as soon as possible” says DVSA

Motorists who took advantage of the MOT extension are being advised by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency to book their tests sooner rather than later in order to beat the expected rush – particularly if their test is due in September, October, or November.
From 30 March all cars, motorcycles, and light vans were granted a six-month extension to their MOT in a bid to slow the spread of the coronavirus, however it was announced in July that the extension was coming to an end and that vehicles due an MOT from 1 August will need to be tested as normal.
“MOT exemptions were issued to allow people to continue to use their vehicles for essential travel during the pandemic,” says Chris Price, DVSA’s Head of MOT Policy.
“The MOT is an important test to make sure a vehicle remains safe to drive. We know that MOT centres are likely to be very busy this autumn with double the usual demand. We are encouraging motorists to consider bringing their MOT forward to help beat the rush.”

If your MOT runs out after 1 August and you continue to use your vehicle you will be liable for a fine of up to £1,000.

If you book your MOT over a month before the due date, then your renewal date for next year will change. However, having your MOT carried out up to a month before the due date will keep the same renewal date for next year.

The latest update took place on 01/08/20 and includes the following guidance “you should not take your vehicle for its MOT if you have returned to the UK in the last 14 days, unless you travelled from a country on the ‘travel corridor’ list or belong to one of the groups who do not have to self-isolate.
