The quest to lowering emissions will change the way we drive

Linked to the top five causes of death in the UK, it’s a silent killer. Slowly but surely if negatively effects our health. We all experience it every day, and, for now, the threat it poses shows no sign of abaiting. However, in many of our lifetimes, everything may change.

Air polution – and the resultant poor air quality – is estimated to be responsible for around 40,000 premature deaths a year in our country. Many of the poisons and toxins we all inhale are attributable to the exhaust fumes generated by petrol and diesel cars. Despite efforts to minimise this pollution, the problem has only grown worse.

Lowering emissions has become a priority for us all. The ongoing investigation into the recent global diesel emissions scandal has shone a light on the size of this problem, further fueling the need for action. The scandal has contributed to a massive fall in diesel vehicle sales. The fallout has been huge. Something needs to change – and soon.

And it will. In July 2017, the UK government announced its intent to ban the sale of all new petrol and diesel cars, from 2040. While many commentators have said this isn’t soon enough, it’s still a significant decision. Should it come to pass, this change will change motoring forever.

Continental are shaping the future of driving

And it’s not just components. Continental are at the forefront of the challenge to bring fully electric transport solutions to the world’s towns and cities. As more and more of them impose limitations on acceptable vehicle emissions, calls for an alternative, sustainable transport solution will continue to grow. Continental have many all-electric transport programmes in development, including their exciting BEE concept, which foresees a future where the individual no longer needs to even own a vehicle.

And their investments in the future of motoring don’t stop there. Continental’s latest commitment to championing technologies that will ultimately lead to lower vehicle emissions is their becoming a Founding Partner of Extreme E, the brand new off-road electric vehicle racing series. Activities like this contribute to the popularisation of EVs, and – ultimately – the wider take-up of electric cars.

Tyres for EVs

And what of Continental’s tyres for electric vehicles? Their exceptional Conti.eContact™ was the first dedicated tyre designed specifically for EVs. Unveiled in 2012, it not only harnesses and controls the additional torque available from electric engines, it also provides drivers with minimal rolling resistance (which in turn generaes higher mileage), better braking performance, and lower noise emissions – something essential for silent-driving e-cars.

With technologies like these, and the eventual ban on future petrol and diesel powered cars, we’re all heading in the right direction to lowering emissions. That’s good for everyone, right?

Not petrol powered, not diesel – electric!

Alternative energies, such as wind and solar, will contribute towards generating the essential electricty that electric cars will run on. EVs currently only account for about 1% of vehicles on UK roads, but the numbers are growing and heading in the right direction. New registrations seem likely to continue to rise. Improvements in technology, and efficiencies in manufacturing have steadily brought the cost of electric cars down, and this trend is set to continue as more and more automotive manufacturercar makers bring out an ever increasing range of EVs. Ultimately, we’ll all switch to electric vehicles, for a cleaner, brighter future.

Continental is at the forefront of this technology. Known better by UK drivers for their highly regarded award winning premium tyres, such as the renowned PremiumContact™ 6, and sensational AllSeasonContact™, Continental are never the less better known throughout the global car industry for their unrivalled electronic and mechanical driving technologies. You’ll find many of this tech in any number of cars on the road today – including EVs.

Gwyn’s job has evolved and expanded in recent times and a more accurate but less pleasing to read title would be Technical Customer Service & ContiAcademy Training Centre Manager. It’s no surprise that Gwyn has excellent knowledge from the tyres up so when any technical questions come his way you know he’ll be providing the best advice possible.
