What are the different types of motorcycle tyres?

By Julia Freeman

Motorcycle tyres can be categorised in various ways, but here we will split them into five types: Sport, Touring, Cruiser, ADV/Dual Sport and Off-road/Motocross.

Sport

Sport tyres are made for high-performance street bikes and lightweight corner carvers. They are lighter than other types of tyre and are made from softer compounds. They tend to also have a more rounded shape than the others, which gives them better grip. The body of these tyres has a stiff, radial construction that ensures stability, support and improved heat dissipation, especially when cornering at high-speeds or braking sharply. Whilst they offer impressive grip, they are not designed for longevity.

Some of the most popular sport motorcycle tyres on the market include the Metzeler M7RR and the Pirelli Diablo SP V3.

Touring

Touring tyres, by contrast, have a construction that is designed to give optimal mileage and traction. They behave in a similar way to sports tyres but usually have a slightly flatter profile and are made of a harder compound. This means that they sacrifice a small amount of grip for increased longevity and range.

They usually have a bias-ply construction that makes them better at absorbing bumps on the road. Touring tyres perform very well in wet weather conditions.

Some of the best-rated touring motorcycle tyres include the Michelin Road 5, the Bridgestone Battlax T31, and the Pirelli Angel GT2.

Cruiser

Cruiser tyres are designed specifically for cruiser style motorcycles such as Harley Davidson. They have a deeper tread and harder compound than sports or touring tyres and give straight-line stability, impressive mileage and good traction in wet conditions. They are heavier than most of the other tyre types.

Some examples of high-quality cruiser tyres include the Michelin Pilot Power 2CT, the Metzeler ME 888 and the Bridgestone Exedra.

ADV/Dual Sport

Adventure bikes and scrambler motorcycles are meant for travelling long distances both on and off road. Their tyres are constructed in a way that means they are smooth enough for road use but have a tread pattern that allows for off-road conditions.

There are several popular ADV/Dual Sport tyres designed primarily for on-road use, including Continental’s Trail Attack 2.

Off-road/Motocross

These types of motorcycle tyres are intended solely for use on dirt tracks. They have a knobbly construction that gives exceptional traction on soft terrain. The tread allows riders to maintain grip as they tackle steep inclines and sharp corners.

Some examples of these include the Michelin Starcross 5, the Dunlop MX53 Geomax, and the Metzeler MC360 available in Mid Hard and Mid Soft varieties.
