To find the right tyres for your bike, you should consider the following things:

  • The type of bike you have

  • The size tyres you need

  • Where you use your motorbike

  • How much you can afford to spend

The main types of tyre

Like motorcycles, bike tyres broadly fall into four main designations; cruiser/touring, dual-sport/ADV, everyday road tyres, and off-road or dirt bike tyres. Knowing which category your machine and riding habits fall into makes your decision much easier. Some bikes, and their riders, fall between two stools but fortunately so do some tyres.

Cruiser/touring tyres are designed to give long mileage and good traction in wet weather. Cruiser bikes include Harley-Davidson Softails, the Yamaha Bolt and Kawasaki Vulcan. Touring bikes include the Harley-Davidson Street Glide, the Honda Gold Wing and the Yamaha Venture. Tyres intended for these bikes generally have stiff sidewalls, greater tread depth and use harder compounds.

Dual Sport/ADV tyres are designed to handle some off-road use. Examples include the Africa Twin, and KTM Super Adventure 1250. Examples of matching tyres include Continental’s Trail Attack 2, the Dunlop D606 and Michelin Anakee Wild. Each tyre offers a different balance between on and off-road optimisation.

Tyres optimised for normal road use have harder rubber and longer durability, combined with good grip in all conditions. Examples include Dunlop Roadsmarts, Michelin Pilot Road 2 and the Pirelli Angel STs.

For use on rough and unpaved terrains including mud, dirt, gravel, and sand, you need rugged tyres with great traction, so dirt and off-road tyres have deeper tread and reinforced sidewalls. Examples include the Maxxis Maxxcross range, the Michelin Starcross 5 Soft, Medium, Hard or Mini versions, and the Pirelli Scorpion XC.

Buy Motorcycle Tyres

If you are serious about bikes there is little point in blunting your enjoyment by compromising. Choose a premium brand known for the great handling they provide. If biking is primarily a way of getting from A to B on a daily basis, consider a brand offering high durability, fuel economy or a more budget price point.
