It is certainly true that fleet managers have a mountain of options to wade through, not just weighing up the relative merits of Pirelli tyres against Bridgestone, but also the array of model options from each manufacturer. In our experience, a high percentage of a fleet's maintenance budget goes on tyres – usually around a third – so choosing wisely is the best way to maximise the return on your investment here. Similarly, van tyres are commonly replaced due to damage rather than wear, so it is important to ensure that tyres are the best possible quality to mitigate against this risk.

Generally speaking, premium tyres cost more but last longer, with other benefits apparent such as fuel economy and advanced technologies which improve handling and operation in the rain. Bridgestone's Ecopia range, for example, has been developed to provide 7.2% fuel saving when compared with standard tyres. This can make a significant difference to the bottom line of any business with a fleet to run.
 
Another benefit in purchasing premium tyre brands is that they are often manufactured in conjunction with vehicle manufacturers, with designs in place to work with specific vans and cars, giving you the best possible match with your vehicle.

These brands are likely to be less well known than premium brands, but still offer some significant benefits. Generally speaking, the tyres will use the same materials as the premium brands but may not have the most up to date designs or technologies so will not be as fuel efficient, long lasting, or durable.
 
On the other hand, mid-range tyres come with a lower price point. As such, the big decision for fleet managers to make here is whether or not the cost savings will make sense considering the fact that tyres will not last as long.

Generally speaking, budget tyres will save money in the immediate term, but will require frequent replacement due to rapid wear and the inability to cope with damage in the way that premium or mid-range tyres will.
 
One of the biggest reasons behind this is the minimal time and budget which these manufacturers put into research and development, although they do still meet minimum industry safety standards.
