Tyre replacement tips

By David Sholicar

You probably don’t give your vehicle tyres a great deal of thought, at least until you experience a flat tyre or a puncture. But have you ever stopped to consider the punishment that your tyres take each and every day?

With the entire weight of your car - and its precious passengers - resting on just a small area of rubber, your car tyres are subjected to tremendous force every single time you venture out onto the roads. The types of surfaces that you drive on, the prevailing weather conditions and the age of your tyres all have an impact on your vehicle’s road holding and overall safety, so it’s important to check them regularly for signs of wear and damage.

Tyres need to be inflated to the correct pressure, as set out in your vehicle’s handbook in order to provide you with a safe and comfortable motoring experience. But over time, the tread wears down, compromising grip and adversely affecting your vehicle’s handling.

Once a tyre has tread less than 1.6mm in depth continuously around the tyre in the central three quarters, you could be subject to a fine and even points on your driving licence. Your car will fail its MOT, but even more importantly, braking distances will be increased, particularly in wet conditions and your vehicle will be more difficult to control, making it a safety hazard. Tyre professionals recommend a minimum of 3mm.

At Protyre, we stock a huge variety of tyres from leading manufacturers, so you’ll always have plenty of choice. Replacement tyres don’t have to cost the earth. Provided that you select the correct size and type of tyre for your vehicle, it doesn’t matter whether you choose a premium brand, such as Pirelli, or a Mid-range option as a replacement. What is important is that you fit the correct tyre as set out in your vehicle’s handbook. You can also find this information printed on the side wall of your current tyre.

When considering replacement tyres, it’s important to consider the type of driving that you do, and the road surfaces that you use most regularly. If you love off-roading, for example, then you’ll need a completely different type of tyre to one that’s used mainly for motorway driving.

Choose an all-season tyre for year-round comfort, or if you drive in extreme weather conditions, you may wish to opt for dedicated winter tyres and summer tyres. Tyres are also available for different load ratings too, which is useful to know if you regularly transport heavy items. Look out for Run Flat technology too, which offers high-strength sidewalls so even in the event of a puncture, you can still safely drive home without having to worry about fitting a spare tyre.
