Buy Winter Car Tyres Online

By Julia Freeman

Winter tyres are designed to give better traction and grip in cold conditions. To achieve this, they are made with a softer compound and have deeper grooves and narrow Sipes (incisions) built into their tread. This helps to disperse water/snow faster and allows for the rubber to move around, keeping it in contact with the road.

Winter Tyre

Winter tyres work best at temperatures below seven degrees Celsius. They have better stopping distances at these temperatures than summer tyres, even if it’s dry. In snowy conditions, the difference is even more significant and winter tyres offer grip even in situations where the tread is packed with soft snow. When it comes to driving in heavy snow, a two-wheel drive car fitted with these tyres is considered safer than a 4x4 on summer tyres.

Tyre wall markings

Winter tyres will have a snowflake symbol on the sidewall. Some tyres will be marked ‘M+S’ (mud and snow) meaning that they are designed with these conditions in mind but are not as specialised.

Winter tyres in the UK

Because our climate is not extreme, there is no legal requirement for winter tyres in the UK. The people most likely to use them regularly are those who live in remote areas such as the Scottish Highlands. It’s a different story in mainland Europe, however, where they are compulsory in countries such as Sweden and Austria at certain times of the year.

When looking to buy winter tyres, you should consider the following:

  • Cost – a key consideration for many, but you do tend to get what you pay for in terms of quality.

  • Durability – how long they are likely to last you is often related to the cost. Sometimes it may end up being a false economy to buy cheaper tyres that need changing more often than expensive ones that last a lot longer.

  • Your driving style – your choice of tyre should match your style of driving.

  • Usage – how often you need to drive in wintry conditions and how far you go should be taken into account.

You don’t have to break the bank as there are some cheap winter tyres available from budget manufacturers including Powertrac, Minerva, and Kpatos.

However, some people may be put off by the initial cost and want an alternative. Snow socks are fabric covers with high grip that fit over the car’s wheels, while snow chains are a steel version of this. Neither can safely be used on snow-free roads but may offer a short-term and less costly solution to an immediate problem.
