After how many miles should I service my car?

Like any responsible car owner, you’ll want to take good care of your vehicle so that you can get the most from it. Keeping a car well maintained will minimise the chances of experiencing major issues with it later down the line. That’s why servicing at regular intervals is paramount. But when it comes to car service frequency, after just how many miles should you take your vehicle in to be serviced?

The best thing to do with many newer cars is to check the dashboard which may well have a reminder system. It’ll flash when it is time to check the oil levels or have the brakes looked at, among other things. This is the simplest way in which to determine whether you need to put your car in for a service.

For those of us, however, who own cars that don't provide dashboard reminders, you’ll need to service your car based upon the guidelines in the owner's manual. These will be based upon the number of miles you’ve covered and the elapsed time since the last service. You’ll also need to decide whether you fall into one of two categories, “normal” or “severe” operating conditions. Anyone driving under “severe” operating conditions is likely to meet one or more of the conditions below:

  • Driving in extreme climates: hot, cold or dusty

  • Routinely taking short trips of five miles or less

  • Driving with heavy loads or towing something

  • Driving in the city with frequent stops and starts

Unless the manufacturer recommends otherwise, if you drive under “normal” conditions, you’ll need to get your car serviced every 12,000 miles and carry out regular maintenance in between when the oil needs changing or filters need replacing. If, however, you drive under “severe” conditions, it is wise to look at getting your car serviced every 6,000 miles for an interim service to maintain the condition of your vehicle in addition to a full service at 12,000 miles.

Servicing your car on a regular basis will help you to identify any problems early on which will save you both time and money in dealing with more serious problems later on down the line. A car that is serviced regularly is also more likely to maintain its value and most importantly will be safer to drive, providing both you and your family with the protection you need on the road.
