Over the last couple months Protyre has supported West Midlands Police with TyreSafe in taking physical action against road users who have illegal tyres on their vehicles.

The events referred to as MARSO (Multi Agency Roadside Safety Operations) are the first of many events of this type being carried out across the West Midlands.

During a selection of stop and check spots in the region traffic officers, with added support from VOSA, conducted vehicle safety checks in line with road law and asked drivers to take an eye and breath test.

The aim of the events was not to just capture people breaking the law, but to visually demonstrate to the public the Police forces dedication to support road safety and reinforce the importance of Tyre Safety.

Events we attended:

• Thursday 5th July - 10am-2pm - Fargo Village Overspill Car Park – Oxford Street – Hillfields, Coventry

• Thursday 12th July - 10am-2pm - Lidl Car Park, Moseley Road, Birmingham

• Wednesday 18th July - A4123 Tesco, Wolverhampton Road, Dudley

• Thursday 26th July - Glass Cone Car Park, A491, Stourbridge

Jonathan Butler, Police Sergeant for West Midlands Police Road Harm Reduction Team and Central Motorway Police Group told us:

'The MARSO activity allows us to give a truly focused partnership approach to reduce the risk of harm on our road network.  By ensuring that the appropriate agency is in place to work in partnership with us on our stop sites, gives us an ability to ensure that the right people are in the right place to take the appropriate action on whatever scenario may unfold from our vehicle stops.  This ensures that not only are we effectively enforcing Road Traffic legislation, we are also educating and signposting road users to appropriate partners to make sure that their offending, whether malicious or accidental is not repeated in the future.  This type of operation is particularly effective in areas where the police are receiving heightened calls for service, or areas where RTC statistics give us cause to place a short term intervention at the location to bring about an immediate behaviour change.  Our analysis shows that we leave a footprint of up to 48 hours in the areas that a MARSO has taken place, ensuring heightened confidence in the community, who see our activity, and fewer calls to service'
