About Triumph
Triumph is an iconic motorcycle brand that has been in almost constant production since 1902. The Triumph marque has come a long way since that first single cylinder model, becoming synonymous with style in the 50s and 60s, when screen legends Marlon Brando and Steve McQueen made the brand truly iconic. With numerous race successes and land speed records under Triumph's belt, models like the Thunderbird, Bonneville, Tiger and Trident have achieved legendary status.
The first great landmark in Triumph history was the 498cc Speed Twin (T100). With a top speed of over 90 mph, this was the bike that put British motorcycles on the map, and it would set the pattern for the next 40 years of production models. By 1946, the company had put the Tiger 100 and the Speed Twin into production and then, in 1954, Marlon Brando was seen astride a 650cc Thunderbird 6T in the teen movie 'The Wild One'. It rapidly became the must-have motorbike for American riders, thanks to its blend of speed and manoeuvrability and its lightweight construction.
In 1955, Johnny Allen set a world land speed record of 193mph on a normally aspirated Triumph motorbike at the Bonneville Salt Flats. Four years later, Triumph introduced the model of the same name. The Triumph Bonneville became the highest selling British twin of all time and Triumph dominated performance records, holding the motorcycle land speed record for 15 years.
In 1963, Steve McQueen, who owned dozens of Triumphs, rode a TR6 650 Trophy in 'The Great Escape'. The 60s was a period of dominance for Triumph at the Daytona 200, and by the end of the decade, Triumph bikes were recording the first-ever laps of 100mph on a production motorcycle. So great was the reputation of Triumph bikes that Evel Knievel used a Triumph to jump the Caesars Palace fountains in Las Vegas, in 1967. But despite the success of the marque worldwide, the Meriden factory was forced to close its doors in 1983. It looked like it was game over for Triumph, until John Bloor, a multi-millionaire with a love of British motorcycles, bought the name and took on the all-conquering Japanese.
Despite a devastating fire in 2002 that threatened to wipe Triumph off the map, sales have continued to climb, with 50,000 units sold in 2012 alone.
Today, Triumph continues to produce iconic motorbikes that are as much loved by US pistonheads as those in the UK. It also produces a comprehensive range of tyres for current production models that are designed to improve grip, steering and braking and contribute to safer all round performance.
