About Kawasaki

The Kawasaki brand is an old and illustrious one, with a name that dates back to 1896. Initially focusing on marine steam turbines, bridge girders, locomotives, passenger carriages and freight cars, it turned its attention to motorcycles in the late 1940s.

At first, it produced engines for other marques, but in 1954 the first Kawasaki motorcycle came off the production line. In 1960, the company opened its own motorcycle manufacturing plant; six years later, it produced its first big name bike - the 650cc W1 model. Although the bike was outclassed by lighter rivals, it marked a turning point in Kawasaki's motorcycle manufacturing history. By 1969, the company was a serious player in the industry. Its 500cc H1 model, or Mach III, spawned two smaller models: the 250cc S1 and the 350cc S2. Soon afterwards, responding to a generalised demand for more powerful bikes, it produced the 903cc engine Z1. This, the company's first superbike, sold well thanks to its sensible price and excellent on-road performance.
