How much is a full service and MOT?

When you book both together, our MOT and service prices start from £99. Please note that the final price you pay depends on the type of vehicle.

To say thank you for booking your car service and MOT together, you'll only be charged £20 for the MOT. Booking a full service and MOT together at your local Protyre garage is a great way to cut down on costs. But that's not the only benefit.

Why should I book an MOT and service near me?

Wondering why you should book an MOT test and service at the same time? There are plenty of reasons why it's a smart choice:

·        Time-savings: Book your MOT and service together and you’ll cut down on time across the whole process. You can avoid the admin of organising them individually, with fewer trips to the garage.

·       Reduced costs: You can save money on your MOT when you book it with a car service at Protyre. Additionally, booking together means less chance of having to arrange time-consuming trips to and from your garage.

·        Lower risk: Alarmingly, 2021 Highways England data showed that over half of drivers didn't know when their next service was due, and two in five breakdowns occurred due to poor tyres, electrics, or engines. With these figures in mind, booking your MOT with your service can reduce the risk of forgetting either one – as well as the likelihood of needing to wait for a tow.

·        Peace of mind: Your car service and MOT complement each other. An MOT test is an inspection of the car in line with regulations from the. DVSA. That’s different to a service, which is a much more exhaustive list of checks, with some overlap. Booking a service before the MOT test will give you confidence that your car is more likely to pass.

How long does an MOT and service take?

If you’re in a rush to complete your MOT, or perhaps it's renewal date is fast approaching, it's worth knowing that getting a car service and MOT shouldn’t take long. In most cases, a full car service takes around three hours, while an MOT should take between 45 minutes and one hour.

If you book both at the same time, your vehicle should be ready to drive away the same or the next day if no repairs are required. Your local MOT and service garage will contact you when the work is completed, but you're more than welcome to wait at the garage too.

What is checked during an MOT and service?

Checks on an MOT test

The MOT will look across legally set criteria, checking for issues with a range of parts and key features. These include:

·        Registration plate

·        Side lights and headlamps

·        Windscreen wipers and driver view

·        Brakes

·        Steering and suspension

·        Exhaust, fuel system and emissions

·        Doors and windows

·        Wheels and tyres

·        Vehicle structure and chassis

To learn more about the checks made on your car during an MOT test, you can view the DVSA-provided checklist followed by accredited testing centres.

Checks in a full car service

During a full service, your mechanic will inspect similar components to those checked in an MOT test. However, this can differ depending on the schedule set out by the manufacturer of your vehicle model, and which servicing plan you choose.

At Protyre, our car service levels include:

·        Basic: A 27-point check designed for appointments booked halfway between the car’s annual service. Checks include the battery, oil, oil filter, anti-freeze, and steering.

·        Interim: A 48-point check designed for annual services, including things like the fan, alternator, driveshaft, joints, and wheel bearings.

·        Full: A comprehensive 59-point check that dives deep into your vehicle, inspecting aspects like the pollen filter, radiator, engine and more, as well as the factors covered in Basic and Interim.

For your ultimate peace of mind, all three plans are guaranteed for 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first.

While there are some similarities between the two, you can be confident that when you book an MOT and service near you with Protyre, you won’t be paying for the same checks twice.

When do I need to book a service and MOT?

MOT and car serviccing requirements differ slightly.

Service: Booking a full service for your car is never mandatory, but it's risky not to get one. Going without a service means that your car could break down more frequently, lost functionality, and your driving experience could deteriorate.

Engine oil checks are a key part of any car service with Protyre. If the engine oil is not regularly topped up or replaced, you risk damaging the components inside your car and its engine. With a build-up of damaging deposits, some parts can corrode, and other components will become damaged from increased friction. Avoiding servicing means that you  might eventually need to book an expensive fix at your local garage.

MOT test: All vehicles over three years old must have an annual MOT test. If you don’t ensure that your car always has a valid MOT certificate, you could face a fine of up to £1,000. Learn more about what happens when your MOT expires.

What to bring to your car MOT and service appointment

To speed up your appointment and ensure as seamless a process as possible for your car service and MOT, make sure to bring the following with you:

·        Service book: This will show us the repairs and replacements your car has undergone before we start your MOT and service.

·        V5C form: If your car is having its first MOT, bring its registration form.

·        A tidy boot: Our testers will often need to check your spare tyres as part of the service element, so remove clutter from your boot so they can easily access it.

·        Wheel locking nut key: Your car will likely have specific keys that unlock the wheel nuts. We need to access the wheels to perform the full service, so you must bring these keys. Nothing gets removed during the MOT test, but we might need the key for repairs if your car fails.
