How Much Does an Aircon Regas Cost: Ask Protyre
Once you have had the joy of driving a car with a working air conditioning system in the middle of the summer season, we're certain that you wouldn't willingly choose a car that will leave you sweltering on a sunny day. Better still, air conditioning systems are also useful throughout the cooler seasons too, as they can very efficiently de-mist your windows on chilly mornings. As the days start getting hotter and sunnier, it's a great time to ensure your car's air conditioning system is working optimally, as this will help you to stay cool when you're on the road. Plus, as well as keeping the inside of your vehicle cool during the summer, a working air conditioning system also works to improve the quality of the air you're breathing.
What is a regas?
During the regas process, old oil and refrigerant gas is removed from your air conditioning system. In line with recommendations from your vehicle's manufacturer, fresh lubricant and refrigerant gas is installed as a replacement. There are two main types of aircon gas 134a and R1234YF, both of which perform the same role but should be replaced like-for-like during a regas service.
To ensure that there isn't any damage or leakage in your car's aircon system, a vacuum test will be carried out by your air conditioning engineer. This will prevent gas leaks and ensure that your air conditioning system is functioning optimally.
As well as ensuring that you can rely on your aircon system when you need it, a regas will also enable you to save on fuel because it won't need to work as hard to provide you with the hit of cool air you're looking for.
How much does a regas cost?
When it comes to air con gas 134a is the most affordable type and a regas with this refrigerant. For newer vehicles using R1234YF refrigerant gas. Please note that as the ports used to regas air conditioning systems are different, it isn't possible to choose which refrigerant is used.

FAQs
How can I tell when I need an aircon regas?
Generally, manufacturers advise drivers that you have air conditioning systems regassed every two years. However, it is worth noting that if you're a regular user of your aircon system, you'll likely need a refill sooner.
If you switch on your aircon and are blasted with warm air, there's a good chance that your system needs a regas. Similarly, if you notice that your aircon isn't reliable or working consistently, it will be worth getting it refilled.
An aircon regas isn't something that forms part of all car service packages and won't be picked up during an MOT. If you want to keep on top of your vehicle's maintenance, it will be worth booking your vehicle in at your nearest Protyre garage for a free air conditioning check.
What refrigerant gas does my aircon system use?
Most aircon systems use one of two refrigerant gas options. The most common type used in vehicles manufactured before 2014 is 134a air con gas. However, since AC r134a gas is less environmentally friendly than R1234YF gas, it isn't often seen in vehicles manufactured after 2017.
