MOTs, car service and repairs – how to book and when

By Julia Freeman

A roadworthy car has never been more important. Thanks to the pandemic, crowded trains and buses are unsafe and high streets not much better. When it is over a lot of us will be commuting to new workplaces or doing mileage to find new ones.

Fortunately, you can book repairs for your car, or book an MOT, without leaving your home. Use Protyre’s website to contact your local service centre and make all the arrangements online safely. We undertake all major car servicing, an interim service for frequent drivers, MOTs, emergency repairs and fast tyre fitting. Protyre’s full service range includes wheel alignments and computer diagnostics. We will even come and collect your car if needed.

Don’t wait until the last minute to book an MOT!

Booking an MOT should never become a hair-raising rush about town. If a fault is discovered, you are legally allowed to drive it home until you can book repairs for your car - but only if there is still time before your previous MOT certificate expires. You can book your MOT for up to a month before the expiry date on your current certificate. If you leave it until the last minute you can be stranded with an illegal car.

What is an MOT?

An MOT is an examination to ensure the car is safe to go on the roads. It does not include any repairs and it does not examine components like the engine, clutch and gearbox. Although it is disastrous if these breakdown, they are not considered road safety hazards so are not part of an MOT examination.

Car servicing

To save even more time and money, many drivers book car servicing every time they book an MOT. From years of experience we know that an annual “Gold” or full service makes sense for every driver. Even if you don’t need to book repairs for your car, a service helps all your components last longer, prevents roadside breakdowns and keeps your running costs low.

For additional peace of mind, a “Silver” or interim service 6 months after an MOT is wise for heavily used cars or those that do a lot of short urban journeys. Older cars also benefit from more frequent checks and tune ups so we also provide an affordable “Bronze Service” you can use more often.
