Are value car tyres safe?

By Mariana Saenzpardo

When we’re buying a new or used car, most of us spend hours browsing websites and poring over magazine reviews in order to select the best vehicle for our needs. But how many of us put the same amount of thought into buying tyres?

Your tyres are the only bit of your car that keeps you in contact with the road surface. Yet they’re not the most exciting part of the car. Most people see them as a necessary evil to be bought only when they wear out or are damaged. It’s therefore tempting to look for the cheapest option you can find. But is this really the best thing to do and are you compromising your safety by opting for a budget brand?

When you buy a tyre from a premium manufacturer such as; Bridgestone, you are buying into years of research and development that have gone into providing good grip, consistent handling and long life. Many of the top brands work with car manufacturers to produce tyres as original equipment straight out of the factory, designed to complement specific models.

But there are also plenty of cheaper brands, some like Falken and Sumitomo you might have heard of, others will have less familiar names. Mid-range tyres are often made by the same companies as premium ones. They will be more affordable, but with the trade-off that they are likely to wear out faster.

Budget brands are a lot cheaper, but they don’t use the same quality of materials as pricier options, so are almost certainly going to wear out faster. That said they still have to meet safety standards, so you can be sure there’s some level of quality control.

So, should you buy budget tyres? The answer really depends on how you use your car. If you do a high mileage, spending a lot of time on motorways, then a premium tyre is going to last longer and provide better levels of grip in all conditions. It will probably, therefore, work out cheaper in the long term as you won’t be changing your tyres as often.

On the other hand, if you don’t use your car very much and most of your driving is around town, then opting for a budget tyre may be a better option. Independent tests have shown that braking and grip levels may be somewhat lower with budget brands, but if you spend most of your time on short runs and around town, this is less of an issue. It also comes down to where you live, if you experience a lot of bad weather it might be worth paying more for a better tyre.

One thing that can help you choose is that all tyres now need to have standard labelling. This covers wet grip, fuel efficiency and road noise, allowing you to select a tyre that is right for your needs. If you are still unsure then at Protyre, our tyre professionals are always happy to advise as to the right choice for your driving requirements and pocket.
