Checking your tyres will help make your Christmas travels safer

By Jason Simms

For many people, Christmas is a time to spend with family and friends. And that often involves a fair amount of time travelling. The combination of winter weather and a car loaded with more people and luggage than usual increases the risk of breakdowns and tyre problems.

Nobody wants to spend their festive season stranded on the roadside - or worse, involved in an accident - as a result of avoidable tyre-related issues.

Here, we look at a few quick and simple checks you can do now to help ensure your vehicle is ready for Christmas and all this season may bring.

Check your tyre pressure

Driving around with over- or under-inflated tyres can cause many problems, affecting the safety of your vehicle and increasing the level of wear and tear, making it more likely you’ll have to replace them sooner than usual. Incorrect pressure will also negatively affect the braking and handling ability of your vehicle. Not something you want to risk when driving at any time of year, but particularly in these winter months when driving conditions may worsen.

Aim to check your tyre pressure at least once a month to ensure that you have the adequate tyre pressure for your vehicle and the load you are carrying. You can usually find the correct tyre pressures for your car in your owner's manual. Alternatively, come and visit your local Protyre garage to have one of our tyre professionals check it for you for free.

Check your tyre tread

While checking the tyre pressure of your vehicle, take the time to check that the tread is within the required legal limits. Under-inflated tyres can cause excess wear on the outer edge of the tread while over-inflated tyres will increase wear in the centre. A simple way to check that your tyre tread is within the legal minimum limit of 1.6mm is to use a 20p coin. If the border of the coin is visible after being inserted into the tread, it is highly likely that you may be close to the minimum limit and should think about replacing your tyres.

Consider winter tyres

Depending on how much you drive, and where, you may wish to consider fitting winter tyres to your vehicle to see you through Christmas and the whole of winter. Made of a special rubber compound which does not harden when temperatures drop below 7 degrees Celsius, winter tyres offer extra grip to help keep you safer when driving in wet or icy conditions.

How to make sure you buy the tyres best suited to your vehicle
Any car enthusiast will know that not all tyres are created equal. However, the quality of tyres is an issue that should be of importance to anyone who drives, as the tyres on your car have a direct effect on safety in wet conditions, stability, the degree of comfort you have on the road, cornering and general road handling. A car with the wrong tyres will not only feel lacklustre to drive, but its safety could be compromised.
