All Season Tyres: Ultimate Guide

By Julia Freeman

All the way back in 1977, Goodyear unveiled a tyre called the Tiempo. This was the first tyre to be referred to as 'all season’.

What are some of the best all weather car tyres?

Falken EUROALL SEASON AS200

The Falken EUROALL SEASON AS200 provides good traction all year and short braking distances on snow. The EUROALL SEASON AS200 delivers a comfortable steering feel combined with convincing performance, stable directional control on wet roads, low tyre noise levels, and great comfort.

Bridgestone Weather Control A001

The A001 offers excellent front-rear balance, strong traction and stable cornering in both dry and wet conditions. In the wet, specially designed lens-shaped blocks are designed to provide smooth water evacuation with minimised water turbulence, reducing aquaplaning risk. When winter does strike, the A001’s high-density siping gives excellent handling and braking on frozen and snowy roads. Bridgestone has also tuned the tread pattern for low noise and optimum road contact in all conditions.

Pirelli Zero Nero

The Zero Nero features a silica-enhanced tread compound, which is blended to provide traction in high temperatures in dry climates and low temperatures in the wet or light snow. The compound is shaped into an uneven tread pattern made up of outside shoulder blocks with siped, intermediate and centre ribs that improve footprint rigidity to increase dry grip throughout acceleration and braking. Shoulder grooves and channels let water slip through the tread pattern which improves wet traction.

Michelin Pilot Sport A/S PLUS

The Pilot Sport A/S PLUS is designed to deliver improved fuel economy, while guaranteeing heightened durability thanks to the C3M production process that is specific to the Michelin brand. High tensile steel cord belts intertwine throughout the tyres adding to the tough Michelin quality. The A/S PLUS features advanced durability that focuses in on pressure points that become weakened when the air pressure decreases within the tyres.

The concept of all season tyres has been, and remains, a very simple one; why should drivers have to switch from summer to winter tyres if one specially made tyre can cope with conditions all-year round?

Essentially, these tyres are able to grip the warm dry roads of summer but also work well on colder winter days. The rubber mix used in these tyres is designed to function well at temperatures both below and above zero degrees Celsius. In milder climates such as that of the UK, where the summers are rarely exceptionally hot and winter snowfall is light in most regions, these tyres are seen as a good compromise. They also work very well in the wet.

All season tyres bear special marks. The most common is the symbol M+S (mud and snow) while some will have the snowflake symbol. Some simply have the inscription "ALL SEASON" marked onto the side.

Why should I buy all season tyres?

All season tyres will provide you with a more than acceptable level of performance throughout the year. Other advantages include:

  • Longer tread-wear

  • Cheaper than other types - with winter tyres prices can vary

  • Extended warranties (up to 90,000 miles)

  • Ability to use the same set of tyres all year round

There are a few factors you must take into consideration before you decide whether all season tyres are for you:

  • Location: The laws in different countries vary with regard to winter tyres. In some it is mandatory to use winter tyres on snow or ice covered roads.

  • Weather: If winter conditions are harsh and result in frequent heavy snow in your location, then it is probably wiser to opt for winter tyres.

  • Average mileage: If you live in a region where the temperatures in winter are not too low and you don’t drive huge distances too often then it is probably better value to keep using all season tyres.

Are all season tyres worth it?

All season tyres can be used throughout the year, and don’t need to be changed every six months as the seasons change, resulting in lower costs. They are a compromise because they will never match the performance of winter tyres in wintry conditions or of summer tyres in dry conditions. But they are well worth considering.
