Tips for Using Electric Cars in Hot Weather
With the summer holidays rapidly approaching, many people will be driving around the UK in search of sun, sea and sand. Nobody wants to start their holiday stuck by the side of the road waiting for a breakdown truck, so in this post, we will cover some tips for keeping your electric car in tip top condition during the warmer weather.
Look After Your Battery
The lithium-ion battery in your electric car works best at temperatures between 20 and 25 degrees, and high temperatures can reduce the range of your car and could also damage the battery. Warmer weather does tend to reduce charging times, but if the battery overheats, you might find the charging speed decreasing or, as a safety measure, the battery may not charge at all. If you can, move your car into the shade to charge and charge overnight when it's cooler if possible. Also, only charge your car to 80% in hot weather to prolong the battery life. This tip is also applicable all year round, as keeping the battery at 80% will keep it in good condition and reduce the risk of overheating and cell degradation.
Check Your Tyres
It is always important to check your tyres before you go on holiday, but as electric cars tend to weigh more, they can be more prone to tyre issues. Remember to check your tyre pressure every month, and especially before any longer trips. At Protyre, we have a wide range of tyres to choose from, including tyres from top brands such as Pirelli and Bridgestone. You can search either by tyre size or by car registration and postcode to find out which tyres are in stock at your local garage.
Keep Your EV's Air Con Healthy
Air conditioning is important in an electric vehicle because it not only keeps the car cool and comfortable but also helps cool the battery.

Air Con & EV Battery Life
So, does air con drain the battery in EVs? Battery life and thus range in an electric car can be a source of stress at any time of year, and yes, using the air con in your car can drain the battery about 11% faster than if the air con wasn't on. 11% is only an approximate figure because it can be affected by the outside temperature, your internal temperature setting and how long you leave it on. However, since using the air conditioning can also help protect the battery, that 11% may well be worth it. At Protyre, we offer a range of car servicing and MOT options, and we can also re-gas your air conditioning when needed for maximum efficiency. To find your nearest Protyre garage, just enter your postcode on our 'find a garage' search.
FAQs: Electric Cars in Hot Weather
Can you charge an EV whilst using the air con?
Yes, you can charge an electric car while the air conditioning is on. If your driveway is in a sunny spot, it may be a good idea to put the air con on while it is still charging and before you get in to make the car a pleasant temperature and to use the power from the grid, rather than your battery.
Does air con reduce range in an EV?
Using the air conditioning in your electric car can reduce the range by approximately 17%, depending on the model.
Should EVs have their air con regassed more often?
As air conditioning is also important in battery cooling in an electric car, it is important to ensure it is always in optimum condition, including gas levels.
