How to Change a Tyre?
Changing a tyre is a safe and simple process if you follow the steps below.
1. Ensure Your Car Is On Flat Ground
In order to change the wheel on your car you will need to ensure it is on solid, level ground. Stopping on soft ground or hills could cause the car to roll and become a danger to both yourself and passing traffic. Also, if on the roadside, turn on your hazards to alert drivers to your presence.
2. Check The Handbrake
Ensure your handbrake is engaged.
3. Secure Other Wheels
If you can place heavy objects such as rocks, concrete or even the spare tyre behind the tyre diagonally opposite the one being replaced.
4. Remove The Spare Tyre
Remove the spare tyre from the boot or undercarriage and place it in reach of where you will be changing the tyre. You’ll need to be able to reach it easily.
5. Get The Jack Ready
Place the jack on the metal portion of the car frame near the tyre you are going to be changing. If you don’t have a metal bit due to a plastic moulding, consult your owner manual to find out where you can put it without causing further damage. On some vehicle there is a notch near each wheel designed for using with a jack.
6. Use The Jack To Support Your Vehicle
Engage the jack until it is supporting but not raising your car. For safety, the jack must be flat to the ground.
7. Loosen The Nuts & Bolts
Turn the nuts and bolts anti-clockwise using the cars wheel brace if necessary. Loosen them, don’t remove them while the tyre is still in contact with the ground.
8. Lift The Car Higher
Use the jack to lift the car further, so the wheel is now clear from the ground. If you notice any instability or the jack leaning to one side, lower and reposition until everything is stable again.
9. Remove The Nuts & Bolts
Once the tyre is elevated off the ground continue to fully remove all the nuts and bolts.
10. Remove The Tyre
Remove the tyre and place out of the way of your working area and any oncoming traffic or pedestrians.
11. Insert New Tyre
Place the new tyre on the axel, ensuring that you have lined up all the bolts.
12. Replace The Nuts & Bolts
Replace all the nuts and bolts by hand and tighten until snug.
13. Lower The Jack
Lower the jack to its supportive resting place where the tyre is on the ground but not load baring. Tighten the nuts and bolts one at a time, moving clockwise tightening as you go until tight.
14. Lower The Car To The Ground
Lower the car to the ground and remove the jack. Check the nuts once more to see if they need tightening anymore and then replace the hubcap.
15. Place The Spare Tyre In The Boot
Place the spare tyre in the boot and take it to a tyre specialist or mechanic. They will either be able to repair it or dispose of it for you.
